Assessment is a vital part of your teaching. In the assessment stage, we make sure that we know that learners have met all of the learning outcomes. There are lots of different ways of assessing. The first one is the initial assessment. Within the initial assessment stage, we would make sure that the learner is okay to start the course, find information about them and if necessary, are there any gaps in their ICT skills or functional skills. Once we know this, we can then address these before the lesson. The next area is Assessment Planning. With Assessment Planning, we are looking at how we are going to assess people and the types of methods of assessment that we are going to be using. These may vary between learners and learned depending on their age or the level of their skills. The next stage is the assessment activity. This is how we are going actually to assess the person.

These can be led by the assessor, like formal assessments, observation and questioning, or led by the learner, like completing assignments or creating a portfolio. The next stage is assessment decision and feedback. Now, this is vitally important. You need to ensure that with any assessment decision, that learner knows exactly why the decision has been made. We then have to review the assessment, here we need to look at the individual assessments that have been made and find out whether those assessment decisions are correct.

We need to make sure that assessment decisions made by the tutor have been agreed upon by the internal verifier and also maybe by the external verifier. Assessing could be done in lots of ways. One could be continuous, which is called formative assessment. This is done continually throughout the course or summative assessments are done at the end of the course. An example of a summative assessment is a practical test or a written exam. The results of this may be given to you by an online portal or in the post or email. When you are giving feedback to your learners, you need to give constructive feedback. A good method of giving feedback is that introduce the good points that they have made by naming two or three of the really good things that you thought about their work and then carefully discuss areas for improvement or personal development.

When giving this feedback, it is always good to finish with good points. In some cases, with assessing, you may need to refer someone as they haven't passed or met the learning outcomes. Do this carefully to motivate them and ensure they know exactly what they need to do to complete the course or the module. You may need to refer them on to further help through another organisation or another course they may need to do to help them. Answer any questions and make sure that they know how to get help if they need it. Finally, if the learner has passed the course, you can still refer them to expand their knowledge or recommend they do further education. Understanding progression is an important part of the feedback.
