Roles, responsibilities and boundaries are different for all lessons that you teach and some of these can be out of your control. All teachers have roles, responsibilities and boundaries that they must follow. So what we are doing now is breaking these down into individual videos and the first video we will look at is roles.

Roles could be things like making sure the initial assessments are completed correctly, identifying barriers to learning and identifying learner needs and the learning style that will enable them to learn best. Also make sure that your planning is done correctly, that you have the correct resources for your teaching and also you carry out reviews and that you deliver a course in a professional and correct manner.

Other roles can include embedding functional skills such as English, Maths, Information Communication Technology or ICT within your session. Make sure you establish and negotiate ground rules, making sure you teach in an inclusive way and engage well with your students. For example, the use of names helps learners feel more settled. Use a variety of teaching methods. Such things as icebreakers or energisers will make the session more inclusive. Ensure that you assess all learners and follow the requirements laid down by your awarding organisation. And finally, look at how you can both self-evaluate and get learner evaluation. All these sections are included in the Teacher and Learning Cycle.
